First, read 15 Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer.
Next, imagine yourself negotiating for your dream job post-graduation. Pick THREE of the 15 rules and explain how you would apply each in negotiating an offer for your dream job.
The first rule I would apply would be "Know Your Worth". Coming out of uni and with the market being very saturated, it will be easy to lose my worth and go for the first thing I am offered. However, I need to set an offer up that i deserve and is an average of what the role is paid at other places. I cannot let somewhere take advantage of me due to it being my first job. i would do my research on what the role pays at other places in the industry that are also based within this area, I will make sure my research is sufficient enough to know it is worth taking.
The second rule would be "Evaluate the entire package, not just salary". As someone coming out of uni, it is very easy to get carried away and just look straight at the salary. However, i need to look at the whole package. What else are they offering that can benefit my life and also my future. I need to look for places that will offer me health care options, offer a pension plan, subsidiaries for gym, where they are based and how much it will cost to get there and little incentives offered for doing well like trips. One place may have the worst salary however, the potential in the future could be through the roof. I need to look at all angles.
My final rule I would apply is, "Don't be afraid to ask" It is easy to get taken back in the whole process and it will be very overwhelming with opportunties that are going to change your life. If you don't know something, ask. I need to do this more and ask questions and not just accept the information they are telling me. This will also apply for the potential to ask for more money etc. If you feel something, ask. It can also potentially impress an employer as it shows your intent and shows you do know your worth. This can make them feel as if you are an achiever and can really push your abilities to the fullest for the company.
