Blog 4-Clay

This blogging assignment is a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure. Sort of.

First, read or review Reading 1.9, Solve Joint Problems to Create and Claim Value, that was assigned last week.

Next, discuss THREE insights you have from reading the article. You may want to relate what you've read to the negotiation exercises we've already completed or your sense of how negotiation is done or what it is and is not. Looking for some discussion, so perhaps a paragraph for each insight.

My first insight is about the pie. They say use a concept where you should expand the pie, rather than just divide the pie. This is creating more of an emphasis in seeing interests that you both have which creates more value and collaboration. This was similar to the negotiation we last done with the author, we naturally found out mutual interest which helps us with some of the options and come to an easy solution for those particular ones.

Secondly, i like how they talk about open communication and how it creates a lot more trust and eventually, a better outcome. In the artcile, it talks about how hardballing can limit gains, and you should do the opposite in most situations. If you are open and honest in conversation, it can lead to both parties coming to a better mutual agreement for the two of you. It can also be better long term if you need a relationship potentially with said party.

My final insight is about the dual nature of negotiation. Making sure no one feels exploited is key, this can lead to an instant end for the negotiation and will come to nothing. I think finding the happy medium between a win win situation and also ensuring a deal that favours you is key.In the first negotiation i felt this way, we both needed what we needed as much as each other, and could easily come to a fair agreement where we both come away happy but also come away with a deal that favours myself and what i want beyond the negotiation.
